	OVERVIEW It is estimated that nearly 45 million children and adolescents in the United States participate in some form of organized athletics. Therefore, it is safe to assume that all practicing pediatricians will encounter sports-related injuries and issues as part of their daily routine. Although not every child is an elite athlete, many will encounter injuries as part of their participation in athletics, no matter at what level. Although sports medicine is not part of residency training, it is an area in which all physicians caring for children should gain some expertise. From screening young athletes before participating to evaluating injured children on the field, skills in the care of the young, growing athlete can be acquired in daily practice and from readily available resources.

	OVERVIEW Perhaps in no other arena is the dual role of the general pediatrician as primary care provider and specialist more evident than in the care of children with complex medical problems. During training, it is so common to provide care for this population that pediatricians often lose sight of the fact that routine illnesses in these children are far from "routine." Although caring for a healthy child is rewarding, participating in the care of a child with special healthcare needs allows for a rich, and often, life-long relationship with the child and family that is unmatched in any other field of medicine. Current trends toward the medical home dovetail perfectly with the care of the child with complex needs, but reimbursement models have yet to catch up with this movement. Pediatricians, often somewhat jaded to the fact that a complex child with a common illness still requires more time and thought, often fail to bill appropriately for their work, perpetuating further poor reimbursement. As advocates for the care of this overlooked population, pediatricians can help to assure families receive the benefits and support they are due, while at the same time motivating local, state, and national governing bodies to provide improved comprehensive care. This issue of Pediatric Annals provides a comprehensive review of the salient issues surrounding the care of medically complex children. Having reviewed the contents of this issue, the participant will be better prepared to share in the unique story of each child’s life while supporting the family and community as a better advocate for their care.

	OVERVIEW Human papillomavirus (HPV) is responsible for nearly 100% of cervical cancers, a large proportion of genital warts, and a variety of other cancers. Two vaccines for HPV are available, each with exceptional efficacy and safety profiles. This monograph reviews available vaccines, their Food and Drug Administration-approved indications, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices’ recommendations regarding vaccine administration. The rationale for immunizing males against HPV will be presented. The vaccine efficacy in males and the cost-effectiveness for immunizing males will be evaluated. Finally, barriers to achieving optimal HPV immunization rates in adolescents and strategies for overcoming these barriers will be discussed.

	OVERVIEW Childhood obesity is a concern of national importance. Physicians need to know the best ways to address weight management with children and their families. 	OVERVIEW Vindico Medical Education’s Office of Medical Affairs and Compliance identified a critical area of need relating to diagnosis and treatment of conjunctivitis in pediatric patients. By review of past activity program evaluations, and a literature search for current and best practice, Vindico determined that there are educational gaps for proper treatment in this patient population, and an educational intervention is justified. Because one of Vindico’s areas of clinical excellence is infectious disease, providing opportunities for education on this issue is a priority for Vindico Medical Education’s educational curricula.
