OVERVIEW
Of the 20 million individuals infected with HPV in the United States, approximately half are between the ages of 15 and 24 years. A vaccine was licensed by the FDA in 2006 and is indicated for females between the ages of 9 and 26 years. While the efficacy of this vaccine has been demonstrated, many unanswered questions remain. This monograph will review available data concerning cross-protection of the vaccine against non-vaccine HPV types. Moreover, the burden of HPV in males and the issue of vaccination in males will be discussed. Data concerning the safety of the HPV vaccine will also be evaluated.
