OVERVIEW
There is a significant disease burden associated with influenza, as it results in more than 50,000 deaths in the United States each year. Due to the potential for resistance to current pharmacological agents, vaccination is the most effective method for management of this virus. Despite this, vaccination coverage remains suboptimal. This monograph will review the two vaccines currently available for influenza, and evaluate the data that support a school-based influenza vaccination program. Barriers to immunization and strategies to overcome these barriers will also be discussed.
