OVERVIEW
Meningococcal Disease in the United States: Risks and Challenges Meningococcal Disease in the United States: Risks and Challenges

As health care professionals, we are particularly afraid of the consequences of Neisseria meningitidis infection and the risk of missing the diagnosis: a previously healthy infant, child, or adolescent who presents to the clinic or emergency room with a febrile illness and no specific physical findings can, in a matter of hours, develop an overwhelming meningococcal infection that may result in severe physical and neurological sequelae and death. The N meningitidis bacterium can manifest in a variety of ways, including meningitis, sepsis, pneumonia, and localized infections, including septic arthritis, conjunctivitis, and pericarditis. Although the majority of children will recover fully, about 6% of infants and about 10% of adolescents will die and up to 20% will be left with potentially severe and permanent complications. Pediatricians who have been spared the ordeal of treating a meningococcal infection must appreciate that it is a very real threat that can strike any young patient at any time, regardless of health status.
